Foods Rich In Anti Oxidants
Antioxidants are beneficial components which fight oxidation damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are reactive molecules with damaging properties. They can attack and mutate healthy cells and may be linked to all kinds of diseases like heart disease, arthritis and even cancer. While free radicals are a natural part of life and cannot be avoided, they can be kept under control by eating foods rich in anti-oxidants and adopting a healthy lifestyle. For example, smoking, pollution, stress and excessive alcohol consumption can cause an overload of harmful free radicals so these behaviors should be avoided if possible.
To help counteract free radical damage and reap the health benefits of antioxidants, eat lots of healthy foods. Fruit is a great source of antioxidants and other nutrients. Acai is a tropical berry that grows in the Amazon which is packed with antioxidants. Although acai is rare you can find acai juice on supermarket shelves these days. Berries in general are very good for you. Go for blueberries, cranberries, cherries, blackberries and raspberries which are all rich sources of beneficial antioxidants. Other fruits to include in your diet are melon, pineapple, apple, banana, citrus fruits and exotic fruits like papaya, mango and kiwi.
Vegetables are also good sources of anti-oxidants. Leafy greens like kale, spinach, collard greens and green leaf lettuce are a good bet. Also go for orange vegetables like pumpkin, carrot, sweet potato and squash. Red peppers, tomatoes and beets are also recommended. Garlic and onions are also good for you and add flavor to any dish. Spices like turmeric, cayenne and ginger also contain antioxidants. When planning an antioxidant rich diet variety is key because there are so many different compounds that work together for maximum benefit.
In addition to foods rich in anti-oxidants, don't forget beverages rich in these beneficial compounds also. Coffee and tea are two top beverages that contain antioxidants. Green and white tea have the most because of how they are processed. Hot cocoa made with dark chocolate is another good choice. You should also try to drink plenty of pomegranate and berry juices. If you aren't a big fan of vegetables there are lots of vegetable juices including V8 and Green Goodness which can help you up your intake. By varying your dietary choices and eating at least five servings of produce each day you can ensure you're getting enough antioxidants.
