Antioxidants In Fruit

There's no doubt that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is good for you. However many people aren't clear on why produce is so beneficial. Take fruit for example. Antioxidants in fruit can play a large role in fighting free radical damage and repairing damage already sustained. Free radicals are molecules produced by natural processes. They can also be produced by sun exposure, smoking, stress and pollution. Too many free radicals can be harmful because they attack healthy cells and create oxidative damage. Antioxidants have protective properties and bind to dangerous free radicals thus rendering them harmless.

You can't avoid free radicals. Of course it is a good idea to follow healthy habits like not smoking, wearing sunscreen and avoiding stress and pollution. In addition you can fight damage by consuming lots of fruit. One of the healthiest fruits is called acai. Acai berries grow in the Amazon rainforest and are packed with beneficial antioxidants, vitamins and nutrients. These berries even contain Omega fatty acids which are also important for optimum health. Acai berry juice and supplements can be purchased from health food stores and even some supermarkets.

Blueberries are another rich source of antioxidants. Their antioxidant capacity is so high because of the compound that gives them their blue color. Berries in general are good sources of antioxidants. Eat plenty of acai, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries and cranberries. Other fruits that contain antioxidants are citrus fruits, bananas, pineapple, watermelon and tomato which some say is a fruit and others call a vegetable. The antioxidant capacity of tomato is increased by cooking and processing the tomatoes rather than consuming them raw. When shopping for fruit or any produce for that matter, buy organic when possible.

Antioxidants in fruit can be eaten with antioxidants in vegetables for optimum effects. Try adding a handful of berries to a spinach salad for a tangy boost. Or, combine fruits and vegetables in the blender for a healthy smoothie. There are a great many juices on the market rich in antioxidants as well including pomegranate juice, green juice blends and even blue and purple juice blends. If you are someone who doesn't like eating lots of produce drinking plenty of fruit and vegetable juice can help you get the antioxidants and nutrients you need.
