Antioxidants And Skin

You may have heard the hype about antioxidants and skin health. It seems that everywhere you look there are new skin care products made with antioxidants. Should you choose these products over other types of skin care products? Many experts would say yes. Antioxidants are important to health, including skin health which is the largest organ of the body. While consuming antioxidant rich foods will offer protection from free radical damage inside your body, it's not so helpful for your skin.

The reason for this is because only a small amount of antioxidants consumed through foods and beverages actually reach the skin. You also need topically applied antioxidant products which are readily absorbed and utilized by your skin cells. Top antioxidants include vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E. There are plenty of other antioxidants also like flavonoids, catechins, phytonutrients and many others. You will find antioxidant rich skin care on store shelves, for every skin type including oily, normal, dry and combination.

One top ingredient for those with oily skin is green tea. Green tea is often combined with citrus extracts to create products that nourish oily skin while controlling excess sebum production. Anyone with oily skin still needs a moisturizer and sunscreen. Look for oil-free products in light mousse or gel formulations. For dry skin you will find antioxidant rich lotions and creams packed with vitamins and nourishing moisturizers like shea butter and vitamin E. If you can't find the right skin care products for your skin at the supermarket or drug store, check your local health food store or try shopping online.

To learn more about antioxidants and skin health, you may want to schedule a consultation with your dermatologist. They can evaluate your skin and help you develop a skin care plan especially made for your needs. Many people find they have obtained sun damage over the years and need a plan to help counteract the sustained damage and prevent new damage from occurring. Antioxidant products may be recommended for this issue. In addition to antioxidant rich skin care your dermatologist can also recommend procedures to benefit your skin such as facials, chemical peels or laser light therapy depending on your individual skin type and needs.
